The Role of Profile Pictures in Online Labor Markets.” After analyzing six months of data from Freelancer.com, the researchers, who are from Harvard and the University of Southern California, found that job seekers with profile pictures on online job platforms that “look the part” were more likely to be hired.

This revelation makes sense to me. I’ve observed that first impressions based on appearance are what drive many hiring managers, HR teams, and executives to favor a particular applicant over others. However, these decision-makers must be cautious about visually driven hiring choices. Instead, they must dig much deeper to determine if the job seeker truly possesses the experience, maturity, and data-based evidence that they can deliver the solutions the organization needs.
